Navratri, Dussehra, Durga Puja, and Diwali are some of the most joyful festivals of the year. Streets light up, families come together, garba grounds fill with energy, pandals buzz with devotion, and homes glow with diyas. But along with the joy, this season also brings a sharp rise in accidents, injuries, and health emergencies.
We plan our clothes, food, travel and celebrations. But there is one thing many of us do not plan for-the unexpected.
Here's a simple truth: festivals are also one of the riskiest times of the year, health-wise and financially. We cannot predict when an unfortunate event may happen. But we can certainly prepare ourselves financially.
That is where the right insurance protection can make a difference. Let's look at why,
Navratri: Fun, Dance and Some Unexpected Risks
Garba nights are beautiful - but they're also physically demanding. People dance for hours, often late into the night, on crowded floors, many times without proper warm-up or rest.
What can go wrong:
Every year, hospitals see a spike in admissions during Navratri.
-
Falls and injuries - With hundreds of people dancing close together, a missed step can lead to sprained ankles, fractures, or worse.
-
Fainting and exhaustion - Continuous dancing in a crowd, often on an empty stomach or in the heat, causes many people to feel dizzy or lose consciousness.
-
Stomach infections and viral fever - Street food stalls near garba venues are a festival favourite, but poor hygiene often leads to food poisoning. Large crowds also increase the spread of viral infections.
-
Heart attacks - This is the most serious risk. Every year, news reports mention cases of people - often men in their 40s with underlying heart conditions - collapsing on the garba floor from cardiac arrest, brought on by intense physical exertion combined with excitement and late nights.
Real-life example: A 38-year-old shopkeeper in Ahmedabad, otherwise fit and active, collapsed while dancing at a garba event. He was rushed to a hospital and survived after immediate treatment, but the ICU stay and cardiac procedures cost his family close to ₹5 lakhs. He did have a health insurance policy, which covered nearly the entire bill - sparing the family a financial crisis on top of an emotional one.
This is exactly why a good health insurance policy matters. So you're not scrambling for money during an emergency.
Dussehra and Durga Puja: Crowds, Fire, and Falls
Dussehra's Ravan Dahan and Durga Puja's pandal-hopping bring massive crowds together in one place - and large crowds always increase risk.
What can go wrong:
-
Stampede-like situations - When thousands gather in one place, even a small panic can cause people to fall, be crushed and get injured.
-
Fire accidents - Ravan effigies are set on fire, often close to spectators. Sparks and debris can cause burns if safety distance isn't maintained. Pandals decorated with cloth, lights, and decorations have, in the past, caught fire due to short circuits or open flames.
-
Falls from temporary structures - Pandals and viewing platforms are often hastily built and may not always be fully safe.
Real-life example: In a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata a few years ago, a minor electrical fault led to a fire that damaged the structure and caused panic among visitors. A few people suffered burn injuries while trying to escape. Those with personal accident cover were able to claim for the disability period, easing the financial strain during recovery.
This is where personal accident insurance becomes valuable. It specifically covers injuries, disability, or death resulting from accidents - including burns, falls, and crowd-related injuries - which a regular health policy may not fully cover, especially disability or loss of income.
Diwali: Lights, Crackers, and Vehicle Risks
Diwali is the festival of lights, but it's also the festival most linked to burn injuries, fire accidents, and vehicle damage.
What can go wrong:
-
Burn injuries - Firecrackers cause thousands of burn injuries every year - to hands, eyes, and faces - especially among children and elderly family members standing nearby. Burn injuries can range from minor to severe, sometimes requiring expensive skin grafting surgeries or causing temporary disability where you cannot go to work for months.
-
Fire accidents at home - Diyas, candles, and crackers near curtains, decorations, or dry balconies can quickly start a fire, damaging property and belongings.
-
Vehicle damage - Cars and two-wheelers parked outside are frequently damaged by stray firecrackers, sparks, or even fires from neighbouring celebrations.
Real-Life Example: Priya was standing on her balcony watching the Diwali fireworks when a stray rocket flew in and burst near her, causing severe burns to her right arm and face. She required immediate surgery and a month of bed rest, meaning she could not go to work. Her Health Insurance covered the massive hospital bills. Additionally, because she had a Personal Accident Insurance policy, she received a lump-sum payout that compensated for her lost income during her month of recovery.
Real-life example: A family in Surat parked their car outside their home during Diwali night. A stray rocket landed below the vehicle, causing the vehicle to catch fire before neighbours could put it out. The repair cost ran into lakhs of rupees. Because they had comprehensive motor insurance (not just third-party), the damage was covered, and they didn't have to bear the cost themselves.
This is why comprehensive motor insurance matters - not just the mandatory third-party cover, but one that also protects your own vehicle against fire, accidental damage, and theft.
Why Insurance Matters This Season
The purpose of insurance is not to stop accidents, illnesses or unfortunate events from happening. Its purpose is to ensure that when something unexpected happens, the financial impact does not become an additional burden on the family.
With the right insurance covers turn a potential financial disaster into a manageable situation. Here's a simple checklist to review before the festivities begin:
-
Life Insurance - Covers death due to natural or accidental reasons.
-
Health Insurance - Covers hospitalization due to falls, infections, fever, or cardiac events.
-
Personal Accident Insurance - Covers injury, disability, or death due to accidents like fire, falls, or crowd-related incidents.
-
Comprehensive Motor Insurance - Covers fire, accidental damage, and theft - not just third-party liability.
Festivals are meant to be enjoyed with family, laughter, and celebration - not spent worrying about "what if." If you're unsure, speak to your insurance sales person - a quick review now can protect your health, your finances, and your family's peace of mind through the entire festive season.
Stay safe. Celebrate fully. Stay insured.
